Sonic State have been visiting a number of artists studios in recent months – Adrian Utley, the co-producer of Portishead gave Sonic a very down to earth, and revealing interview. Highlights include the (understandable) love for the ARP 2600, neve channel strips, and surprisingly, the ongoing use of Otari.
Below are all of the 4 sessions provided by Sonic State…
Part 1
Third, the new album from Portishead has been out for a couple of months now, to much critical acclaim. It’s a darker and less commercial record than previous but still seems to have done well in many countries.
Unusually the band played a bunch of shows before the album was released (due to a change in schedules). Good thing they did as the audience have been gagging for it. After all, it’s been getting on for 10 year since their last major release. So what’s been going on? I popped over to guitarist, synth-freak and co-producer Adrian Utley’s crib to have a chat about synthesizers, studio stuff and to take a look around.
Part 2
In the second part of the interview with Adrian Utley, guitarist, synthesist and co-producer of all of the Portishead albums: Dummy (1994), Portishead (1997) and the latest Third which has seen the band break their 10 year release silence, Adrian talks about the recording process, the tools used and how biscuits played an important part in the process.
